HOW WE GOT HERE
Passionate about design and beautiful things, I have always enjoyed having my hands full with cardboard and paper, glue, wood, ovens and bread, scissors, scraps and sewing machines, books and, above all, hugs. An architect by profession, I have had the opportunity to work with great professionals and for great clients in an effervescent London, full of music, smells, people, art, museums and multiculturalism.
But life is an even greater adventure when there are children around. (And mine started six years ago now.) Since then, I have not only kept my hands and days full, embracing the chaos, beauty and fun that came to stay. We have also strived to empty our home of emptiness and fill it with the essential. With hugs, empathy, honesty and simplicity. With modesty and sobriety. We strive to free ourselves from the disposable and embrace what lasts, what is well done. Beauty.
Kaukek is a personal upcycling, a transformation that tries to unite my learnings, the experiences and values that I have gathered, and synthesize them through a product. Kaukek is not perfect. Kaukek is honest..
WHY FACE MASKS
After a few hectic weeks of lockdown at home, from March to May, with all the members of the Kaukek team, it was time to hit the streets again. At first we started using disposable hygienic masks, and even KN45s. But that, besides being a substantial monthly expense for a family of four like ours, went against our principles. We were generating a terrible amount of rubbish. And my children took it upon themselves to remind us that this was not good for the turtles and the fish that lived in the sea.
A few disposable masks later, we began our search for reusable hygienic masks that were safe and approved, that were comfortable, with which we could breathe without any difficulty and which had a cool design... We did not know that the search was going to be so complicated!
So I decided that I wanted to go on the adventure of making our own masks. Masks, first and foremost, HONEST. Kaukek's number one priority is:
– Safety - Producing safe and approved masks
– Regulations - Complying with all the current requirements and regulations
– Protection Being able to leave our home knowing that we are protected and protecting others.
Another one of our drives was to make sure that our production chain was national. We wanted to minimize our environmental impact and help the national textile industry. We also wanted to control the quality of the production process in a closer and more efficient way and to give our masks the high quality of the textile products "made in Spain"
That is why we worked really hard to find Spanish suppliers and manufacturers with whom we can share our principles and ways of working. And we are very pleased to be able to offer safe hygienic face masks of the highest quality.
We have devoted many hours and efforts to the design of our packagingWe have wanted it to be recyclable (hence the use of cardboard) and reduce the amount of plastic we used to a minimum (because we couldn't avoid having some). And we wanted a local company that reflected the values and ethics of Kaukek to be in charge of its production. In our mind there was also the idea of giving our customers the opportunity to consume in a responsible and conscious way.
At Intgraf they received us wholeheartedly and we are very proud that they are the ones producing our packaging. As a Special Employment Center founded in 1996 it provides meaningful paid jobs to people with disabilities, allowing their personal development as well as their integration into the labor market.
